When a player pushes their chips across this line into the common area, they have made a bet. The amount they bet is affected by the limits, which are usually set by the players.
Limits
Some players prefer limit poker to no-limit because it allows them to play more hands without getting into trouble. In this way they can win more money and enjoy a more relaxed table environment. Limit players are generally more conservative than no-limit players and may make fewer raises but they should still be careful to only play their premium hands.
In fixed limit games players can only raise a set amount of money in each betting round. Typically this is one bet and three raises. No-limit games allow unlimited raising, which can lead to enormous pots even at low starting stack depths.
Many casinos adjust their limits throughout the day. This is usually done to reflect the amount of business they are receiving. However, they sometimes change their limits for no apparent reason. For instance, I have seen a full table that is not doing much business on a Saturday night be pushed up to 6:5 limits.
Bluffing
Bluffing in poker is an important skill to master for any serious player. While there are no definitive “rules” for bluffing, there are a few factors that you should always consider before executing a bluff.
Identifying and exploiting profitable bluffing spots is the key to consistent profitability. Generally, the higher the stakes are, the more profitable bluffing becomes. Having a good understanding of your opponents’ tells is also essential to successful bluffing.
The first factor you need to assess is your opponent’s ability to fold a strong hand. If they don’t have any blockers or unblock auto-folds (hands like king-high that lack showdown value), it’s often worthwhile to consider a bluff. Similarly, if they have been catching a lot of bluffs lately, they may be on tilt and will likely tighten up as a result.
